2016 Canadian World Tournament Show Ski Team

 

 

This page outlines the procedures and criteria by which the 2016 Canadian World Show Ski Tournament team shall be selected. The selection committee shall have the authority to make all decisions with respect to the criteria and team selection.

 

Introduction:

The objective of the selection committee is to select Athletes who will form a cohesive team most capable of success at the World Show Ski Tournament in September 2016.   A cohesive team takes priority over the strength or accomplishments of individual athletes.

 

Team Overview:

The 2016 Canadian National Show Ski Team will represent Canada at the World Water Ski Show Tournament in Wisconsin Rapids, Wi on September 9-11, 2016.  At the tournament Team Canada will face off against the best show skiers in the World represented by Australia, Belgium, China and the USA. Subject to the member signing a WSWC Athlete Agreement, the term of team selection shall be for a period that will begin upon announcement to the team through December 31, 2016.

Team Eligibility:

To be considered for selection to the 2016 Canadian World Show Ski Tournament team as identified in this document, an Athlete must:

  1. Be a registered member of WSWC, and in good standing with WSWC.

  2. Be deemed eligible by the International WaterSki and Wakeboard Federation (IWWF)

  3. Be a Canadian citizen. In consideration of the expected international travel, an Athlete must have a valid Canadian passport that expires no less than three (3) months after the completion of the competition and an Athlete must be entitled to travel to the host country.

 

Team Roles:

The World Tournament permits up to 35 team members to acitivly participate in the show.  In addition to the 35 support members and alternates can be named to the team:  The 2016 National Show Ski Team will be comprised of the following members:

  • Skiers - 25

    • Male & Female Skiers

    • Multi discipline

  • Alternate Skiers – No set number of alternates

    • Male & Female Skiers

    • Multi discipline

  • Boat Drivers - 4

    • 1 - Twin Rig Ski Boat

    • 2 - Inboard Tow Boat

    • 1 - Pick up boat                                                             

  • Observers and Spotters - 4

  • Show Announcers - 1

  • Show Music & Sound - 1

  • Show Crew - 5

 

Functional Expectations:

Skiers:

Skiers are expected to competently perform skiing and stage acts during the show.  Acts may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Pyramids

  • Jump

  • Barefoot

  • Swivel

  • Ballet

  • Doubles

  • Trick acts

 

Boat Drivers:

Drivers are responsible for driving towboats and pickup boats.  They should have demonstrable experience driving twin rig ski boats, inboard direct/V-drive boats, and/or outboard pick up boats.  Show ski experience is recommended to ensure drivers can drive show ski patterns.

 

Observers and Spotters:

Spotters are required to watch skiers and “pin” acts when needed.  Spotters play a key component to the safety of the skiers and must be prepared to act accordingly when needed.  Spotters should be competent swimmers that are capable of helping a skier who may be require assistance.

 

Show Announcer:

The Announcer plays a critical role in the show and is a key component of the presentation.  They must be confident in their ability to carry the show and announce the acts.  Knowledge of show skiing is required.

 

Show Music & Sound:

Music and sound plays an important part of the show and is coordinated by a sound person.  The sound person and announcer will work together to ensure the show’s theme is conveyed through the songs and sound effects.

 

Show Crew:

Although only 35 members of the team are permitted in the show area, the show crew is critical to the success of the team by ensuring all the equipment is ready for the presentation.

                 

Team Selection Process:

All those wishing to be considered for selection to the team must:

  1. Send an application to the Show Director by September 6, 2015. Please indicate the role (s) you wish to be considered for.

  2. If you have a video of your riding and skills please submit to facilitate the selection process.

 

All applications should be submitted to the Show Director at ShowskiCanada@gmail.com.

 

The selection committee will review all applications and select a team based on skills, show skiing experience and team compatibility.   Team members will be announced at the Canada Show Ski Reunion on September 18, 2015.  At the discretion of the selection committee, additional members can be named to the team up until September 9, 2016.

 

The selection committee reserves the right to remove team members for any reason that may impact the team's performance at the tournament

 

All decisions by the selection committee will be final.

 

Selection Criteria:

Selection to the 2016 World Tournament Show Skiing Canadian team will be determined on the basis of previous performances and the review of your sport resume.  Aspects to be considered:

 

●      Experience on an amateur or professional show ski team is beneficial.

●      All athletes must show consistency in show ski disciplines.

●      Athletes need to be comfortable with role playing real or fictional characters and also speaking publicly to large audiences.

●      Athletes must function well within the team, as safety and trust are critical to the success of the team

 

Selection of Alternates:

The selection committee may, but are not obligated to name alternates based on the foregoing selection criteria.  The alternates may be selected at the time team is selected or may be selected at a later date.

 

Illnesses, Injury or Other Extenuating Circumstances:

If an Athlete selected to the team becomes ill or injured, he or she must seek immediate medical attention and report the illness or injury to the team manager or director.  The director will assess the situation and will make a recommendation to the team selection committee regarding the Athlete’s continued participation on the team. In order to assess the Athlete, additional medical tests may be conducted or further information regarding the Athlete’s condition may be gathered. Where it is determined that an Athlete will be replaced, the selection of replacements will be based upon previous evaluations or replacements will be selected from the alternate list if one has been made available.

Final day Selection Committee can make changes to the team roster - September 9, 2016

 

Training and Tournament:

Spring Training in Florida - March/April 2016 TBD

Summer Training - July 2016

World Water Ski Show Tournament in Wisconsin Rapids, Wi - September 9-11, 2016

End of term of team commitment - December 31, 2016

 

Team Funding and Financing

  • The entire program is self-funded through donations and team dues

  • Individual members are expected to solicit team sponsorships to meet fundraising commitments.  Sponsorships cannot include any tobacco related products of any kind.

  • Team members may not bind WSWC to any servicing obligations related to securing sponsorship without prior consent from WSWC and possible related servicing reimbursement (ie advertising, web page content, etc)

  • Any donations received by the team may be eligible for a charitable tax donation receipt.  All donations would have to meet the criteria established by Canada Revenue Agency and be collected by WSWC and 100% attributed to the program.

  • Team members will be required to pay:                

    • Team Membership: $ 400

    • Sponsorship Minimum: $ 400

    • Other commitments TBD
