2014 World Show Ski Tournament

After a great tournament and solid third place finish in 2012, Team Canada was motivated to hit the water in 2014 and put together a ski show that had never been seen before in Canada. With dedicated leadership and skiers returning from all over the globe to be a part of the team, they were able to do just that.

The team added new acts and tricks to the show that year, including their largest ever ballet line, a unique “one act show”, an impressive jump act, and Canada’s first ever four tier pyramid. The team also committed many dry land hours to work on choreography, costumes, scoring, and overall showmanship to ensure that they brought a competitive show to Janesville.

The 2014 tournament was considered another resounding success for the growing team. With unbelievable support from their fans, Team Canada skied to another third place finish, trailing the second place Australian team by only a few points.

As in 2012, the team left Janesville awed and inspired by the magnificent caliber of the skiing they saw that weekend. The popularity of show skiing has grown in the four years since the first tournament and show directors Charlie Newlands and Sacha Wilson expect tremendous interest in the team for the next tournament.

Many past and future team members hope to be a part of the 2016 team to show the world that Canada is a competitor in the show skiing community and take home the gold!

2012 World Show Ski Tournament

When Canadian show skier Charlie Newlands first caught wind of an international show ski tournament, he knew that this was something he had to be a part of. Charlie reached out to Waterski Wakeboard Canada and within months assembled a team of Canadians excited to participate in this new challenge.

Family owned and operated “Summer Water Sports” is located in Muskoka, Ontario and has nurtured many of Canada’s premier show skiing athletes. The 2012 team was made up in large part of SWS skiers as well as several other skiers from Ontario that competed individually within their disciplines.

Unlike their neighbors south of the border, competitive show skiing is not a sport in Canada. There was much to learn in order to put together a show that would score well at the tournament. Team Canada chose the ski show theme “Batman” to make their first appearance on an international stage.

The team’s hard work all summer paid off and Team Canada put on a no fall show for a full crowd that weekend. The third place finish was considered a huge success. The team left Janesville that year feeling incredibly proud of their performance but also inspired to push themselves even further out on the water next year.
